All Saint's Sunday / Thankoffering / LWR / Pastor's Appreciation Sunday

The Sunday, November 4th service was a combination of events.

All Saints Sunday was held on this day.  The custom of commemorating all the martyrs of the Church on a single day goes back at least to the third century.  All Saints' Day (Nov. 1) celebrates not only the martyrs and saints, but all the people of God, living and dead, who together form the mystical body of Christ.  We remembered today those of MLC who, during the past year, were new to the Church Militant:  Eliot Sharples, Hudson Harrifeld, Owen Ideus, and Beckett Eggers; and those of MLC who, from last All Saints' Day, have passed to the Church Triumphant: Mervin Ottemann.

Thankoffering Service was incorporated into this service.   Women of the Lutheran church have been gathering for Thankoffering services since the early 1900's.  This year was a commemoration of the 25th year of the Women of the ELCA.

The quilts completed by the Sewing Group during the past year were displayed on the pews.  A blessing on the quilts was given by Pastor Berggren. Tied quilts for the past year totaled ninety.  Fourteen of these were sold with proceeds going back into the Sewing Fund.  Seventy-six quilts were designated to Lutheran World Relief.

The Faith-Hope Circle collected items for Personal Care Kits.  Seventeen kits were given to those in need through Lutheran World Relief.  The Tabitha Circle sponsored the collection of items for School Kits.  Thirty-two kits were given to children throughout the world and a nice variety of school items were also given to local schools.  Seventy-seven bars of soap were collected by the Women of the ELCA and given to LWR also.

During the coming week the quilts, school kits, personal care kits and soap were packed and delivered to a central shipping location.  From there, items are transported to the LWR warehouses where they are then prepared for shipping to locations around the world.   Click   here    to read more about the work of Lutheran World Relief.

Also on this Sunday, Susan Piper, a representative of Thrivent Financial, presented Pastor Berggren with a gift certificate for "Pastor Appreciation" Sunday.
