Memorial Gift

With a recent memorial that was received from the Mervin Ottemenn family, the Altar Guild has purchased a new Paschal Candle.  A prayer of dedication was given on Easter Sunday.

The Paschal Candle is a large candle two to three inches in diameter and three or four feet in length.  It is used during Easter to show the presence of the risen Christ among his people and, therefore, is used at baptisms and funerals as a sign of dying and rising with Christ, of our death and his.  It is used on the Gospel side, the congregation's left, from Easter Eve until Pentecost, or by the font.  It symbolizes our Lord's forty days on earth after his resurrection.  It is a symbol of victory, of the Light that has overcome the world; of the passover of death because of Christ's victory over death.  At other times, this candle is placed near the font and is lighted at each Baptism and at the head of the deceased at a funeral, telling of the Easter promise made real through our Baptism.  Baptismal candles receive their light from the Paschal Candle.
