50 Years in the Ministry

On Sunday, June 3, 2012, Martin Luther Church honored Pastor Bruce Berggren for the 50th Anniversary of his Ordination.  In 1962, Pastor Berggren graduated from the Augustana Theological Seminary at Rock Island, Illinois.  He was ordained at Ford Auditorium, Detroit, Michigan by the Augustana Lutheran Synod.  He was a member of the last class that was ordained in the Augustana Synod.  The day following his ordination, the Augustana Evangelical Lutheran Church became part of the Lutheran Church in America.

Pastor Berggren prepares for the Eucharist during the June 3rd worship service.

Pastor Berggren has served at the following locations in Nebraska since the day of his ordination:
Bertrand - a dual parish, Immanuel - Adullam Parish
Schuyler - St. John's
Lincoln, Nebraska - The Lutheran Student Center Campus Ministry at UNL
Omaha - St. Thomas (a mission congregation)
Stromsburg - Calvary (Swede Home)
Hebron - Grace Lutheran

After his Hebron parish, Pastor Berggren retired and was then appointed to a two year Intentional Interim at American Lutheran in Cozad.  The Berggren's then moved to Nebraska City and he became the Interim Pastor at our neighboring church, St. Paul's (Hickory Grove).  In July, 2007, Pastor Berggren became the Interim Pastor at Martin Luther Church.

We were pleased to have Rev. Sylvia (High) Karlsson join in the service on the 50th Anniversary celebration service.  Rev. Karlsson was a student in Pastor Berggren's first confirmation class in his first parish.  Also, a part of the service were Rev. Don Nelson and his wife, Rhoda.  Rev. Nelson was an inspiration and mentor to Pastor Bruce during his teen years. Members of Pastor Berggren's family were also special guests for the occasion.

Pastor Berggren was presented with a cash gift from the members of MLC.  A dinner was served in the church basement following the service where memories where shared.

Pastor Bruce and wife, Joan, also celebrate their
52nd anniversary on June 3rd.
